Tinnitus Guide: What It Is, Evaluation & Evidence

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. It can have many causes and deserves a more careful response than simply shopping for a supplement.

Important: This page is educational, not medical advice. Dietary supplements should not be presented as treatments for tinnitus or hearing loss. Seek qualified medical care for new, sudden, one-sided, pulsatile, or otherwise concerning hearing symptoms.

What tinnitus can sound like

People describe ringing, buzzing, humming, hissing and other sounds. The experience can be intermittent or persistent and can affect one or both ears.

When evaluation matters

Medical or audiologic evaluation is particularly important for sudden hearing changes, one-sided symptoms, pulsatile tinnitus, neurologic symptoms, significant dizziness or persistent bothersome tinnitus.

Management is not one-size-fits-all

NIDCD describes approaches including hearing aids when hearing loss is present, sound therapies and behavioral therapy. The appropriate path depends on the individual and underlying factors.

Where supplements fit

NIDCD states that vitamins, herbal extracts and dietary supplements advertised as tinnitus cures have not been proven effective. That is why this site does not describe ZenCortex or other supplements as tinnitus treatments.
